    Rs. 404 billion 'full budget' focuses on polls

    The Interim Election Government on Tuesday unveiled a ‘full adjusted budget’ of Rs 404.82 billion with particular focus on elections. It allocated a total of Rs 14 billion for election-related activities—Rs 6 billion for elections and Rs 8 billion for security purposes.

    The Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) has urged the government to endorse crucial bills related to business and economy, saying doing so will help make the country’s investment climate better. It also reiterated its demand for common economic agenda from the political parties.

    News from around CIPE Partner Network

    The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) strengthens democracy around the globe through private enterprise and market-oriented reform. CIPE is one of the four core institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy. Since 1983, CIPE has worked with business leaders, policymakers, and journalists to build the civic institutions vital to a democratic society. CIPE's key program areas include anti-corruption, advocacy, business associations, corporate governance, democratic governance, access to information, the informal sector and property rights, and women and youth.

    Atlas Network: Announcing the New Templeton Freedom Award

    To mark the tenth year of administering the Templeton Freedom Awards, Atlas offers this special edition of Highlights to announce the 2013 Templeton Freedom Award with its new prize structure. For the first time in its history and in future years, the award will be presented to one winner along with a $100,000 prize recognizing exceptional think tank achievement. This fall, six finalists will be invited to attend the annual Liberty Forum in New York City, November 13-14, where the winner will be announced during the event's Freedom Dinner, November 14. All finalists will receive a $5,000 prize.

  • Missing the target

    National planning has, for a long time, been among the government’s favourite agendas. This can be traced back to the Rana period (before World War II) when the first 20-year plan was announced but nothing significant was achieved. Following that a 15-year plan implemented by the then Rana Prime Minister, Mohan Shamsher in 1949 for which a national planning committee was also formed.
